National Farmers Market Week is August 4-10th, but in our opinion, it should be every week! As a community bank, small businesses are important to us. Our community thrives when our local
businesses are successful.
In honor of this special week, we reached out to Messick’s Farm Market to learn more about farmers markets. Messick’s Farm Market opened in the spring of 2013 in a shed in Jimmy Messick’s vegetable field. According to Jimmy, “It wasn’t until the spring of 2014 did we open the doors of our retail building. We felt this was necessary to diversify our family’s dairy operation when milk prices became unpredictable.”
Interacting with members of our community on a daily basis is just one of the many perks to a farmers market. Jimmy gets to enjoy his hobby of growing things, so it is a win-win for him. He also says, “it’s a very special moment when you hand a piece of produce to a customer to sample and watch their face light up when they taste the freshness and flavor of what you’ve grown. I think it’s important for people to connect with the food they purchase.”
The most important thing about a farmers market is not what we expected. Jimmy believes the most important thing is for a consumer to get to know the farmer. We should be asking ourselves, “Where is his farm? Did he grow this? What growing practices did he use? And most importantly, know the seasons for produce. An example might be sweet corn. Local corn will not be ready before mid-June at the earliest.”
